Your blood type is a genetic powerhouse with primary influence on the immune system, metabolism and digestive processes. By knowing your blood type, you will take an important step toward personalizing your health decisions for a more vibrant, healthy life.

While in reality there are more than 300 blood types, they all fall into one of four key groups — type A, B, AB or O, collectively known as ABO.
We each come under one of these groups and, while type O is the most common in Africa, your blood group is determined by your genetics.
Your parents each pass down their blood type genes and the mix determines your type — so, a type O mom and a type B dad 0 4 b+s Health could have a type O or B child, whereas a type O mom and dad could only have a type O child.
What makes the four types different from each other is a molecule — known as an antigen — that attaches to the outside of your red blood cells.
“If you imagine a red cell as a doughnut, think of these molecules as the sprinkles and trimmings on the doughnut,” Professor Robert Flower, from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, says. "Your blood type may be an important factor when it comes to your health and wellbeing."
DIET, FITNESS & BLOOD TYPE
Should your blood type dictate the food you eat or the exercise you do? Studies haven’t made a conclusive link, but devotees such as Sydney fitness trainer Mark Moon swear by it. “I see a big change in clients’ bodies when I put them on a plan that fits their blood type,” he says. “It works biologically, but it also changes their headspace — they feel they’re working from the inside out.”
According to Dr Peter D’Adamo, author of The Blood Type Diet, different blood types release different amounts of chemicals, like cortisol or adrenaline, in response to the stress caused by exercise, and training correctly can balance these in ways that reduce fat storage.
If you eat foods not suited to your blood type, it’s said to trigger inflammation, which is linked to weight gain.
Your type is also said to affect your levels of stomach acid and how you digest food. Here’s what converts claim is best for each blood type.
TYPE Os:
Respond well to vigorous exercise, and have high levels of stomach acid so can tolerate a diet with more meat.
TYPE As:
Have high levels of cortisol so they should do calming exercises like hiking or swimming, and perform best on a vegetarian diet.
TYPE Bs:
Need a mix of intense exercise and more meditative work. They do well with lots of meat (but not chicken), dairy and green veg.
TYPE ABs:
Suit a balanced workout plan, best on a diet that’s high in fish and seafood, and prefer smaller meals.
